Windows to Japan
Soak up your helping of Japanese culture and art and banish those travel blues without leaving London.
The ‘Window to Japan’ outdoor exhibition will be within the Spitalfields site from Saturday 1st May – mid June, giving passers by the chance to peek into the fascinating world of Japanese art and culture. The huge 12 window exhibition will feature work from mural artists, manga artists, a captivating LED selfie screen, where you can screenshot ‘picture moments’ in Japan, and a live-screen window streaming into a Marugame Udon kitchen in Tokyo.

In preparation for its opening, Marugame Udon will be taking over the bustling streets of Spitalfields Market to launch the interactive ‘Window to Japan’ exhibit, inviting locals and tourists from afar to peek into the world of Japan with an exciting line-up of manga artists, mural artists, a fascinating LED selfie screen to capture your moment in Japan, and a glimpse into a live Marugame Udon kitchen in Tokyo so you can see the making of the traditional Sanuki udon with your own eyes.
Members of the public will also have the chance to win an entire year’s supply of free udon noodles. The lucky winner will have the choice of feasting on either Vegan Kake Udon, Katsu Curry Udon, Two Pork Tonkotsu, Freshly Fried Tempura and all drinks including sparkling sake from Kanpai and Asahi beer for a full 12 months.
As London opens up and the sun shines upon the city, the Spitalfields site will give Londoners a glimpse into the culture and artistic lifestyle of Japan. The first window will feature work from professional mural artist and illustrator Dan Kitchener, who will showcase a live mural painting on Saturday 1st May. Drawing inspiration from the everyday life of Japan to its lively nightlife exploring lights and sights of the city, further exhibits include Japanese manga artist Chie Kutsuwada, whose work is deeply influenced by the Shojo and Yaoi genre.

A huge LED selfie screen will also transport passers-by to the energetic streets of Japan. Simply take control of the selfie screen, explore Japan and share your travel photos. In another window, members of the public will be able to take a front row seat in the Udon kitchen, catching a glimpse of the hustle and bustle of Marugame Udon’s live kitchen in Tokyo, seeing first-hand how traditional Udon is made.
The Window to Japan exhibition will be live outside the Marugame Udon Spitalfields restaurant between 1st May – 7th June with a number of prizes up for grabs over the 6-week exhibition, including free udon noodles for a year and a selection of hampers full of Sake cans, Kikkoman soy sauce, Ramune lemonade, Sesame oil, La-zu chilli oil and 2 x Marugame Udon bowls.
